Student
Leadership

Mitcham Girls High School provides a range of opportunites for students to develop their leadership skills including; Zonta Women’s Leadership Program, VISION leaders, Youth Opportunities, House Captains and Peer Leader Program.

International Women’s Day is a significant day in our school’s calendar with the celebratory events co-designed by a team of staff and students.

VISION

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has been replaced with an exciting new initiative—VISION. This student leadership model is designed to better align with Mitcham Girls High School’s priorities and our core values of Belong, Grow, and Achieve.

VISION is structured into three key streams, each playing a vital role in bringing our vision for the school community to life:

  • BELONG (School Culture): Focused on fostering a strong sense of belonging, this team will enhance school culture through initiatives such as school clubs, Community Wednesday, the Ambassador badge, and the Twilight Fete.
  • GROW (School Community): Dedicated to strengthening connections with the wider community, this team will organise and run events like fundraising days, casual days, school tours, whole-school activities, and the Twilight Fete.
  • ACHIEVE (School Consultation): Committed to student advocacy and collaboration, this team will work closely with students, staff, and leadership groups such as House Captains and the Future Thinkers group to ensure student voices are heard, alongside coordinating key initiatives like the Twilight Fete.

Through VISION, student leadership at Mitcham Girls High School is evolving to create a more engaged, empowered, and connected school community.

Zonta leadership Program

Zonta is dedicated to achieving gender equality in education and supports scholarships, fellowships and awards for women and girls pursuing education and careers in these traditionally male-dominated fields.

Students in Year 10 are provided the opportunity to engage in the Zonta leadership program. The program develops leadership skills and enhance opportunities to gain leadership roles in the future.

The club holds a graduation ceremony, during which the groups present their projects and report on how the project has impacted the community or school. The ceremony is attended by the club, school staff, participants’ families, community stakeholders from the council and state politicians.

Graduates reported increased confidence and willingness to take on leadership positions.

House Captains

Mitcham Girls High School students belong to one of three houses, which form the basis for competition in athletics, swimming and other events. Each house has a team of Captains, one from each year level, who have been elected by their peers. These House Captains take a leadership role as they manage their house teams during Sports Day, Swimming Carnival and lunchtime House Sports competitions. At the end of the year the house with the most points is presented with the Collyer Cup. The three Houses are:

Mitchell - Red

Named after Dame Roma Mitchell; red represents the legal colour worn by judges.

Fraser - Blue

Named after Dawn Fraser the Olympic swimmer; representing the water.

Spence - Yellow

Named after author Catherine Helen Spence; represents the colour of writing paper often used in the early 1900s.

Peer Leadership Program

Peer Leaders play an integral role in the successful transition of Year 7 students to Mitcham Girls High School. Peer Leaders are positive role models who provide ongoing support and guidance to our newest members of the community, fostering a strong sense of belonging at Mitcham Girls High School.

This program supports and ensures the development of:
  • Leadership skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Reflective practice
  • Personal growth
  • Community service
Students apply for and are selected as a Peer Leader. Peer Leaders commit to supporting the transition of Year 7 students to Mitcham Girls High School.

Peer Leaders form a LEAP class in Year 11 and are assigned a mentor teacher to provide ongoing support and assistance. Students will receive 10 SACE credits after completing an Integrated Studies LAP across the year.

The Year 10 and 11 students are present in many of the Year 7 and 8 Care Group programs to support teachers and to organise activities. This program encourages leadership and a culture of trust and acceptance. The Leaders also support the annual three-day Year 7 Camp.

Peer Leaders take part in an intensive training program where they develop skills to assist them in delivering workshops and assisting students with issues. Their leadership training is ongoing for the first Semester. Once the structured, formal in-class support comes to a close, the leaders will have established strong relationships with many of the Year 7s and will continue to be available to support and mentor them in many different ways.

The program supports many of our school goals, in particular, providing students opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, wellbeing, independence, civic responsibility and leadership skills.

Youth Opportunities: Personal Leadership Program

Our face-to-face Personal Leadership Program is delivered in partnership with schools one day per week over 10 weeks and rewards students with 20 SACE points on successful completion. The program provides students with the enterprise skills they need for future education and employment success, along with tools to increase confidence, self-worth, and motivation, helping them to build the optimism and resilience to overcome adversity throughout their lives.
