Week 7 Parent Update

29-Nov-21Information regarding End of Year, the 2022 Timetable and Care Group program and other useful information from the Senior Leadership Team.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

End of Year Celebrations

It has been wonderful to connect with parents again. Last week, staff, students and parents came together to celebrate a very special event as we farewelled the year 12 students.  It was wonderful to see so many students receive awards in a wide range of pursuits, including academic excellence, leadership, supporting others and community service.  A huge thank you to Sarah Chambers and all the amazing staff who have supported the students in their final year.

On Tuesday evening, we also held a Parents & Friends Night for the incoming year 7 parents. The purpose of this evening was to connect parents with each other and to continue to build a strong community.  This is especially important as our students come from over 60 feeder schools.  Thank you to Summer Bowles and Rose Forster for organising this evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We are hoping that our Acquaintance Night will go ahead early next year so we can meet with families from all other year levels as well.

2022 Timetable

2022 timetables will be sent out, together with end of year reports, during the last week of term.

Strengthening the Care Group Program

We are excited to announce that after a comprehensive review, we are strengthening our Care Group Program for 2022. We have designed a program that is relevant, engaging, and rigorous to extend each of our students. The program will build foundational skills to set our students up for success not only at Mitcham Girls High School, but in life after school.

Year 7

The focus of the Year 7 Care Group Program aims to build a sense of connectedness and belonging with the Mitcham Girls community and ensuring students are transitioned to high school effectively. We also aim to build strong and respectful relationships with their teachers and peers. At MGHS we create an engaging and student focused program that responds to student needs and interests, whilst also being underpinned by the CPC (Child Protection Curriculum). Students are exposed to a variety of learning experiences and presentations, where they are encouraged to work in groups and build on these relationships in a trusting and safe environment.

Year 8

The Year 8 Care Group curriculum aims to engage our students in a wide range of programs and topics, building on their knowledge from Year 7. At Mitcham Girls High School our Care Group Program aims to engage our students in a wide range of programs and topics, building on their knowledge and skills from previous years. Underpinning our Care Group Program is the CPC (Child Protection Curriculum) whilst also addressing current societal issues and concerns as they arise. Our Care Group Program also aims to build a sense of connectedness and belonging with the Mitcham Girls community, along with building strong and respectful relationships with their teachers and peers.

Year 9

The Year 9 Care Group curriculum aims to engage our students in a wide range of programs and topics, building on their knowledge from Year 8.

Year 10

The Year 10 Care Group Program will provide our students with an opportunity to plan for their future pathways. We are proud to partner with Driven From Within to deliver a leadership program called “Mindsets for Success,” which will encourage our students to plan for success in their pinnacle years at Mitcham Girls High School. Embedded within this program, students will complete the compulsory SACE subject Personal Learning Plan or PLP. By embedding it within our Care Group program, we ensure that all students have the full year to successfully complete this course and make meaningful and productive links between the commencement of SACE study, our Care Group program and developing positive mindsets in order to set up for success as they progress through senior schooling.

Year 11

The focus for Year 11 Care Group will be leadership, school connectedness, belonging and Research Project completion. Our Year 11 Care Group Program will allow all students explore what leadership means to them. We are proud to announce that we have partnered with Future Ready Leaders who will be providing a highly engaging leadership program of workshops centered on innovation, creativity and wellbeing.

Year 12

We have made significant modifications to our Care Group Program for Year 12 students, in response to the needs of these students in their final year of secondary schooling. Using a model of flexibility and personal responsibility, students will start the day with mentors in the Year 12 Study Centre. Care group time in the morning will be informal and flexible to student needs, operating as a chance to connect and support progress and wellbeing. Attendance will no longer be taken at this time. Monday Lesson 4 will remain compulsory for all Year 12 students. This time will be a vital session to support the development of effective time-management, stress-management and study skills in Term 1, and post-school pathway planning in Term 2 and 3.

Car Parking

Unfortunately, we have had several complaints from our local community re parking.  We ask that all families are respectful of our neighbours when parking on nearby streets and to avoid parking across driveways. Many thanks for your support in this matter.
