The GifT Dance Program at Mitcham Girls High School offers girls the opportunity to develop their skills and passion for dance performance. Students develop creative, technical and physical understanding and an appreciation of dance as an art form.

The program is designed to meet the needs of students identified to be talented or those with strong potential in the field of Dance. GifT Dance students are passionate and committed to a dance education, complemented by a balanced general education. The program offers unique educational opportunities in performance, creative endeavours and studies in technique and theoretical studies in Dance.

The students in the GifT program are selected via audition. Students audition when they are in Year 6, or may audition for a place at the end of Year 7, 8 or 9, dependent on availability. It is expected that students have had significant previous experience in Dance, or show a strong aptitude, and a strong interest. It is an expectation that students and parents are committed to the program for the four years, at which point students move into studying Dance at the SACE level at the school. Regular checks are made on student attendance, progress and attitude.

Genres studied include Contemporary Dance, Jazz, Classical Ballet and Musical Theatre and participants are also exposed to alternative dance genre through visiting artists. Students have had the opportunity to explore Australian Indigenous, Flamenco and Classical Indian dance. Students explore their own creativity via compositional and choreographic tasks, and study the ideas of past and present choreographers.

Theoretical topics include anatomy, health for dancers, review writing, historical and contemporary topics in regard to dance in Australia and globally. Excursions to professional performances, workshops and interstate trips have also been included. There are many opportunities – and lots of fun learning!
