Mitcham Girls High School

Mitcham is only 1 of 2 public girls' school in South Australia.  It is unzoned, enabling students to enrol regardless of where they live.  It is situated ony 6 kilometres from the heart of the city and is easily accessible by public transport.

Leading the Way Year 7 to High School - Mitcham Girls High School Pilot

The South Australian public education system will be moving Year 7 to High School in 2022.  This will bring our State into line with the Australian Curriculum taught in high schools and make it easier to deliver subjects and improve outcomes for students.

A small pilot program of 3 high schools will provide early insights into project and workforce planning, curriculum, communications, and successful implementation and transition processes of Year 7 to high school in our State.

Mitcham Girls High School has been selected to take part in the pilot program, along with Wirreanda Secondary School and John Pirie Secondary School.

The schools were selected because of our strong connections and positive working relationships, focus on the important transition between primary school and high school, and progressive approaches to teaching and learning.

We have received a very high level of interest from families wishing to enrol in Year 7 for 2020 at Mitcham Girls High School and we have reached our ideal enrolment numbers to deliver progressive and quality teaching and learning for Year 7.

It is encouraging to see such a strong response and we look forward to welcoming our first Year 7 students in 2020.

The registration of interest process has closed and we are no longer taking registration of interest for 2020.

For families interested in registering for Year 7 in 2021, this process will be initiated in early April 2020.

In 2021, Mitcham Girls High School will offer 150 places for Year 7 students. These 150 places will allow our school to offer the innovative teaching and learning we deliver in facilities designed to support flexible, progressive and dynamic teaching and learning.

If demand from families exceeds places available at Year 7, consideration will be given to:

  • students with siblings currently at the school
  • distance from the student’s home to the school
  • curriculum options available at the school (excluding special interest programs)
  • transportation and location convenience

In some cases, the school may give automatic entry to students, where:

  • the student has received and accepted an offer for enrolment from our Dance special interest program
  • the student identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander through the Enter for Success program (by the end of term 4)
  • the student has been granted enrolment due to special or extenuating circumstances, including but not limited to a child in care where there is a custody or guardianship order made under the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017.

Families not offered a vacancy will be placed on a waiting list.

As only 1 of 2 public girls’ schools in South Australia, Mitcham Girls presents a unique opportunity for your daughter to benefit from our small and nurturing environment that provides a strong focus on the Arts and STEM.

If you would like to be added to a mailing list for interested families, please contact the school at 8272 8233.

Year 7-8 Transition Process

As Mitcham Girls High is a public school, the transition process is managed through the Department for Education.  Parents should be aware that, due to the information being processed at a state-wide level, the process is a lengthy one.

The Year 7-8 transition process will commence in the last week of Term 1 and continue through to early Term 2.  Year 7 students attending a government primary school will be given a transition pack from their primary school.  Non-government families can request a transition pack from  Parents must complete the Registration of Interest for Placement in Year 8 (PDF example).

For enrolment at Mitcham Girls High School, you must indicate on your Registration of Interest form that your daughter does not wish to attend her zoned high school. If you nominate Mitcham Girls High School on the form as your first school of choice for your daughter, then she will be automatically assigned to attend Mitcham Girls. No supporting evidence is necessary, as Mitcham Girls is not a zoned school and aims to accept all Year 8 students who believe they will benefit from a single sex environment.

All students who have applied to attend Mitcham Girls High School will receive an acceptance pack by the end of Week 4, Term 3, which will include our school enrolment forms. These forms must be completed and returned directly to the school as soon as possible. Prompt return of the forms will guarantee your daughter's place and give her a greater a chance of receiving her first preference choice for subjects.

Mitcham Girls High School holds Transition Days for future Year 8 students. You will be advised of the date in your acceptance pack and through further correspondence from the school.

For further information on the general process, visit the Deparment for Education website or contact Mitcham Girls High School on 8272 8233.
