At Mitcham Girls High School we encourage girls to explore the discipline of Science, a traditionally male field, and to discover how fascinating and rewarding the subject can be. Our dedicated team of Science teachers bring knowledge, enthusiasm and fun into the classroom. The faculty also provide co-curricular opportunities for girls to explore the many facets and applications of Science.

Girls participate in a wide range of science excursions including:

  • 'Getting into Genes' program at the Waite Institute
  • 'DNA Technology' practical at the CSIRO Centre
  • Zoo Night Safari where our Year 9 SHIP class were lucky to be the first secondary class to stay overnight in tents at the Adelaide Zoo and enjoy a night safari
  • Engineering Challenge where our Year 10 SHIP class were able to solve problems and work in teams against other schools
  • Forensic Science: Year 8 students had fun preparing a crime scene for our budding forensic scientists
  • Chemical Murder Mystery
  • Urrbrae wetlands
  • South Australian Bridge Building Competition
  • Science Expo: the Star Dome Planetarium, making electronic torches and the Virtual Interactive 'Human' were some of the most popular activities

Physics Fun

Physics at Mitcham Girls High School is fun. Students plann and carry out activities to present Physics concepts to the wider school community. They have Tug-O-War demonstrations, Light and Colour Activities, Bernoulli's Theorem Activities, Surface Tension demonstrations where students 'walked on water', as well as Paint Ball demonstrations and Rocket Launches!

Oliphant Science Competition

All Year 8 and 9 students participate in science investigations for the Oliphant Science Competition. The students choose their own topic from the available options: photography, essay writing, experiments, posters, games, crystal making and multimedia. The girls have fun exploring Science and releasing their creativity. The Science teachers judge the best entries and these are entered in the state competition. Each year Mitcham Girls High School entries enjoy many successes with firsts, seconds and thirds being gained in the different categories.
